Prof. Dr. Fernando P. Cossío

6Fernando P. Cossío
Fernando P. Cossío (1960, San Martin de Villafufre, Cantabria, Spain) studied chemistry at the Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain) and received his Ph. D. at the University of the Basque Country in 1986 (Prof. C. Palomo). After a postdoctoral stay at CNRS (Talence, France, Dr. J.-P. Picard), he joined the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as Profesor Titular (Associate Professor) in 1988 and Catedrático (Full Professor) in 2002. In 1993, after a short stay at UCLA in the laboratories of Prof. K. N. Houk he decided to combine theoretical and experimental organic chemistry to investigate the origins of selectivity in chemical reactions. The author of more than 160 peer reviewed papers and 7 patents, his research interests include pericyclic reactions (with special emphasis on thermal cycloadditions), C-C bond forming reactions, and medicinal chemistry.
From 1999 to 2001 he served at the UPV/EHU as the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry. From 2001 to 2004 he was the Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations of this University. He is also a co-founder of Ikerchem, and Spin-off Company of the UPV/EHU focused on the design, chemical synthesis and development of novel chemical entities. Since 2009 he is the president of the Executive Committee of Ikerbasque, the Basque foundation for science.
