96Carlos Roque

Carlos Roque Duarte Correia received his Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, in 1976 and a Master’s degree in Chemistry of Natural Products from the same university in 1980. In 1986 he obtained his PhD degree in Chemistry from Stanford University, USA, under the supervision of Professor Paul Anthony Wender, working on the intramolecular photo-induced diene-diene cycloadditions. After completing his PhD, he returned to Brazil and accepted an offer by his Alma matter at UFRJ to pursue an independent academic career as an assistant professor, and later as full professor (1997-2002). In 1993 he joined the Chemistry Institute of UNICAMP, and in 2009 became "Professor Titular" of the university. His main research interests include organic synthesis and the development of new synthetic methodologies involving palladium and arenediazonium salts, aiming at the concise and practical synthesis of natural products, bioactive heterocyclic compounds, pharmaceuticals and functional compounds. He is a former Coordinator of Post-Graduate Studies at the Chemistry Institute of Unicamp, and acted as Vice-Director of the same Institute from 2009-2010. He is also a recipient of the 3M "Non-Tenured Faculty Award" (2000), and has been acting as international adviser for the International Foundation for Science (IFS), Sweden, since 1994.
